Computer Hardware/Software Engineering?

Lawanna Livsey: A number of notes:1. Software is more flexible than hardware for looking for jobs. Additionally, it's a lot easier to make money on software than hardware, as there is less overhead. Correspondingly, there are a lot more software development jobs than hardware design jobs.2. Hardware design is still a big field also. If you really want to do it, do it. As long as you're good at it, you can find a position. No matter what you get good at, by mid-career, you'll likely end up in some sort of managerial role if you are any good. Which, in other words, means you will no longer be very good at working with actual hardware but will be good at working with teams to make them produce good hardware.3. Robots are still a growing field. If you want to go into them, go into them. Additionally, quite a few companies sponsor an MS while you work. If you're hardworking enough to hold down a job and do a couple night classes each semester, you can get a masters in! a few years and your company will sponsor it. Lockheed Martin is one company I know that does such programs in conjunction with some good schools. I would assume that Raytheon and other offer similar programs.Overall, I'd say to do what you want, if you're willing to work long hours. If you like your job enough to throw yourself into it, you can get places in hardware or software. If you're checking in at 9:30 and checking out at 4:30 every day, you'll be stuck in the lower rungs either way....Show more
