Granville Stray: Actually, during WW2 some of the transports were completed without the superstructure and fitted with a flight deck. They were able to accommodate up to six aircraft and were used to provide air cover for convoys and patrol for enemy submarines.They were much smaller than the military escort carriers, and landing and taking off on them was very tricky. With a bit of the gallows humor, the pilots called them Ensign Eliminators.Modern tankers do have a helicopter pad on the deck, however the rest of the deck is taken up with the pipe manifolds, so there is actually very little unobstructed deck. Ninfa Aronica: Tankers aren't ideal because too much of their below decks space is closed in tanks. So you need to do a lot of work to convert them to useful carriers. Contain! er ships work better. They are designed to be strong without their cargo, so you can build up whatever storage and facilities you need with containers. The UK used to have kits for this.
